Discuss: The advantages and disadvantages of English as a global language. Languages have developed because of the necessity of people to communicate with each-other. In a globalized world the need to build relationship between countries is indispensable. In a less populated world where communities were quite separated many different languages evolved. In recent time, however the world has become more globalized and different countries and different nations need to communicate ……So increasingly English is playing this important role. The consolidation of English as a global language despite of positive impacts in facilitating the communications across-abroad and helping commercial trade, however there are several negative aspects including the threat to the small languages and the creation of linguistic inequality. Therefore, this essay argues that English as an International language can seriously damage local languages if it is not seen as an additional language to the mother tongue, also can create linguistic inequality. English as an international language has two significant negative consequences such as can seriously threaten minority languages because of its predominance. It can also cause serious disadvantages in peoples career. Firstly linguistics argues that the domination of English in global communication is a danger for many small languages. What this mean is that the local languages are likely die out. For example English has endangered several local languages such as; Manx, Welsh, Gaelic, Maori, Australian Aboriginal languages amongst others. (Crystal, 1997. P.114) cited in (Burns 200, 51). Similarly but a slightly different focus Etizioni (2008, p,121), argue that the adoption of English is feared to undermine the first language of extant countries including French, Japanese and Brazil.
