English is a West Germanic language originated on the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic invaders from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the northern Netherlands. Initially, Old English was a group of several dialects, reflecting the varied origins of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England. One of these dialects, Late West Saxon, at one point came to dominate. The English original antique was then influenced by two invading waves: the first wave was of speakers of the Scandinavian branch of the Germanic language, who conquered and colonized parts of Britain in the eighth and ninth centuries; the second was the Normans in the eleventh century, who spoke Old Norman and developed a variety of English known as Anglo-Norman. These two invasions caused English to be mixed to some extent. This is the tool that allows communication with people from other countries in the globalized world in which we live. It is indisputable: English has become the global language of communication per excellence, one of the most popular in the world. It is the official language, or has a special status in some 75 territories worldwide.
