Personal to Political Essay English 111 has surprisingly been an interesting journey. In the beginning it was not even possible to see an end to it, and now that we are a quarter way through, it is hard to simply recall the beginning. I have gained a great deal of knowledge from being enrolled in this class and that is something I am definitely grateful for. I have learned both about myself and about those around me. I have learned about writing of course, but I have learned more than I have in past English courses. This journey was certainly not an easy one to begin since I had been out of school for so long, but so far it is fair to say that it is paying off. This course is allowing me to experience a variety of writing thanks to the multi-genre assignment. This assignment was my favorite and I am sure that applies to many. It was nice to sit back and ask myself what am I getting out of English 111? Again, this is an experience that no other English class has given me so it really opened my eyes. I really did not know it was possible to convey the same overall idea in two completely different ways. It was a good activity to expand our minds and to get us to think out of the box for a change. I now know that I enjoy writing different genres that do not consist of only typical essays. I never knew one English class could possibly teach me about writing, about others, and about myself all in one semester. I honestly did not expect to gain any personal benefits from taking a course that was required by Germanna Community College, but I am definitely being proven wrong. Before I started this class I held back a lot more and stuck to the basic guidelines for every writing assignment. Now that I am taking this class, I am not afraid to be myself and express that in my writing. I am not afraid to give feedback, to trust others, or to experiment with different types of writing. I certainly feel that I will be well-rounded now and it is all thanks to taking English
