Engineering Ethics Reflection

This situation would bring up major issues within the group, as it goes completely against many of the core engineering ethics principles. As engineers we are expected to work and show our work truthly, and to not compete unfairly with other engineers, or to represent their ideas as our own. Obviously, by using another teams idea and simply copying it onto their own designs, this team member has gone well against these principles and upon discovering it would have lost all trust from other group members. But in this case, the plagiarising team member is not the only one in the wrong, the other team member who knew and was encouraging the behaviour is equally responsible, as we also have the responsibility of working on an informed conscience and pointing out where others are being unethical within a group. By not doing anything in the situation, and by encouraging them, this team member would be equally responsible for any action taken by the plagiarising team member. In this situation, there are many different options of things that could be done, with going straight to the project leader, or to the group being obvious choices. However, I think that this would be bypassing several different levels that need to be addressed first. Firstly, speaking directly to the offending team member about their actions and either confirming or getting them to stop what they are doing. Speaking to the group about the situation would be my next point of call, and discussing with them their thoughts on the situation, and trying again to get the team member to stop and remove the other team’s contribution to our project. If still unresolved, I would then go to the project mentor/tutor and see what they would do, and get them to speak to the team member and get them to see the ethical point of view. Finally, as a last resort, I would go to the project leader, and explain the
