After ten years of enslavement, assisting as a merchant, and working as a seaman, Equiano purchased his own freedom. At the age of 44, Equiano recalls his life in his own autobiography entitled The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African. In this narrative, Equiano speaks of his life back in modern day Guinea where the native language was Ibo. Equiano tells us that he was the son of a chief and – even as a young child – ranked among his tribe’s most prominent (soon to be) warriors. Throughout the story, he accounts for his life up until 1789, which is when the book was published.

Cannon uses a 1973 research study to back up his argument. In 1973 a town in Canada introduced television to masses of people in an attempt to perform a study on second graders. What the research found was amazing. Carl Cannon says in “Honey I Warped the Kids” “Within two years, the incidence of hitting, biting, and shoving increased by 160 percent in those classes” (1). According to Elsa Barkley Brown and Thomas C. Holt, editors of Major Problems in African American History, “Between 1910 and 1930 more than a million African American men, women, and children left their homes in the south and took up residence in mostly urban areas throughout the country” (126). Within that period, an estimated half-million African Americans migrated between 1916 and 1921. “This period of rapid population shift is known as the Great Migration” (Brown and Holt 126). Also, thousands of black immigrants from Caribbean countries entered the United States during this time period to settle in urban areas. Because of the huge impact of these migrations on African Americans and on the nation at large, it is important to understand the causes and patterns of migrations, why migrants decided to relocate and how they organized, how migrants were received by African American already living in urban areas, how migrants expectations were met, and institutional and cultural changes as a result of this movement.
