Question 1 Employers are grappling with the issues of whether employees should be restricted to access the internet for personal use if they use their own private e-mail account. This issue is a cause for concern for employers as the work of their staff may be at stake when they do not perform well at their workplace. Thus, employees should not be allowed to access the internet for their own use. This is because the personal internet use may affect their performance as employees may send personal e-mail messages, play games, download pornography, gamble or order goods online. The employers also have the right to monitor and restrict the workplace internet use as they are the ones paying wages of the employees. Therefore, employees should be forbidden from gaining access to the internet using their personal account to increase productivity. There are many disadvantages if employees are allowed to use the internet for personal use because while it is the window to the world and it connects people and culture, it also can distract employees’ attention and focus on their work. Updating facebook pages, shopping for goods, listening to music and watching movies on You-Tube, and e-mailing affects their performance as they take away the time that is to be spent on their jobs. Furthermore, when employees go online for their personal use, they may violate copyrights, disclose in advertence of trade secrets, and contaminate employers’ computer systems through viruses and other hazards. Even if the employers do not mind the employees spending the time online, the employees should not do whatever they want, send e-mails to whoever they like, or shop online without limit. Instead, they have to surf wisely and should not take advantage of the employers flexibility.
