Employee Benefits:   Wellness Programs, a solution to improving employee fitness and lower health cost rates
    According to Hart (2013), one of the biggest challenges facing organizations today concerns health care spending.   A 2010 Bravewell collaborative report reviewing the medical and corporate literature on cost effectiveness found that nearly 60% of all after tax profit is spent on corporate health benefits.   The report also noted that 80% of those costs were spent on 10% of employees and that prevention of disease was less expensive than treating the disease.   The implementation of wellness programs in the workplace both improve employee fitness and lowers health cost rates.
    MacDonald and Westover (2013) point out that Americans are working in a more sedentary environment where there is minimal physical activity during the work day.   Also, since there are more efficiencies there is less need for physical labor, one reason people may be less fit.   Further, the workforce is becoming unhealthy through the lack of exercise, bad eating habits, and changes in lifestyles.   Therefore, there is a need for the implementation of health promotion programs in organizations.
    Obesity is a pressing issue in America.   The U.S. Surgeon General has stated, in the Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation 2010 that today’s epidemic of overweight and obesity threatens the historic progress made in the increase effort of America’s quality and years of healthy life.   Also, that two-thirds of adults and nearly one in three children are overweight or obese.   Obesity has also become an epidemic that has affected so many people adults and children whose life expectancy is no longer than our own.   There has also been no solution to obesity because it has so many sources.
