Emotional, Behavioral, and Physical Disabilities Emotional, Behavioral, and Physical Disabilities In an inclusive classroom, a teacher is going to have a variety of students, some with a variety of disability and disorders. The first step of trying to find an effective way to educate all students, is to get to know them. For those with disabilities, gets to know what their disability entails, such as students with emotional and behavioral disorders, physical and health disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries. Once a teacher knows what a disability entails, the educator can find effective teaching strategies, find ways nurture self-esteem, self-determination, and self-advocacy, and find ways to teach all students to respect one another. Effective Teaching Strategies for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders All students have some difficulty regulating strong emotions, and this can lead to behavior issues. For some students, it can be more difficult, because of a medical condition. These medical conditions can cause frequent outbursts, which can interrupt the teacher and learning. A strategy that can help is to acknowledge the disability with the effected student, so that the student’s feels understood and respected from the beginning. Students with emotional and behavioral disorders can often control themselves better if given the option to step away. Having a quiet area in the classroom gives them an appropriate choice. Encourage students to journal, which allows them to get in touch with their emotions and possibly understand the causes. Lastly, reward affected students frequently for positive behaviors, instead of correcting, because the student can easily get frustrated or angry with corrections (Schreiner, n.d.).
