EMO Fact or Fiction ‘EMO’ Emotional/Emotive, Hardcore, Music, Self-Harm, Depressed, Death and Suicide are some of the words that are involved in this new sub-cultural, that is taking the adolescence world by storm. The word ‘EMO’ was first started in the 80’s in regards to music that was being made at the time described as ‘depressing’. Some say that it started within the Hardcore Punk scene but yet there really is no evidence regarding this fact. The first EMO band was ‘Sunny Day Real Estate’ but the scene really took off with the arrival of ‘Soundgarden’ and ‘Nirvana’. EMO music has been linked to promoting cutting and self-mutilation. For example, ‘Taking Back Sunday’ portray cutting, on one of their album covers and have produced a song entitled ‘Cute without the E’, ‘Dashboard Confessional’ also made allusions to cutting in their song: ‘If you can’t leave it be, might as well make it bleed’. Other popular EMO bands include ‘Panic! at the Disco’, ‘My Chemical Romance’, ‘Fall Out Boy’. They were labeled this, due to their music, and general appearance. Some of their songs are about fallen love, being alone, fallacy of relationships, to name a few. Within the sub-culture of the music are the fans otherwise known as ‘EMO’s’ or ‘scene kids’. Today ‘EMO’ means something completely different. It is used to describe a person (usually a teenager) who is unhappy, lonely or depressed. EMO is also slang for a fashion style (guys wearing girl’s jeans and girls wearing clothes too small). Their hair done is a certain way with both genders wearing make-up. Their attitudes are anti society, pro emotion suffering and pro self harm. ‘EMO’ is short for emotional.
