Emission Pollution In Maryland

740 Words3 Pages
The state of Maryland as beautiful and populous as it is has been faced with the issue of dealing with pollutant particulate matter. Particle matter pollution can come from various sources. In Maryland the effect of some pollution, is the direct result of emissions pollution from various power plants within the state, and the culprit that can cause various health risks to Maryland residents. Measuring how much pollutant matter plants emit will result in the decrease of the impact of the health risks that have become an issue within the state of Maryland. A major pollutant is the usage of coal powered plants rather than fuel usage plants in Maryland. The usage is quite large, somewhat measured and not stringently regulated, despite Maryland…show more content…
Opacity is not a clear and precise measure of how many pollutants are released, which is unfortunate for it is the measurable standard accepted. The Environmental Protection Agency introduced a more environmental conscious pollutant matter standards requirement that protects public health and requires a secondary tier in detecting visibility and measurements of such dangerous particles that was revised as currently as June 2012, (www.epa.gov). Also in 2006 the federal government required that newer power plants have continuous emissions pollutant measurements, (www.environmentmd.org). In 1970, The Clean Air Act was signed to foster economic growth while improving human health and the environment, (ww.epa.gov). Progression has indeed improved in air quality since the Clean Air Act was signed into law, however air pollution remains a threat to public health…show more content…
The Maryland emissions board should be reactionary in making this happening, and especially hold power plants accountable if violations happen. New systems and technologies should be used or created in reducing the creation of pollutants. Even though plant owners may be reluctant in doing so due to cost and other factors, policymakers have the authority and should exercise that power by deciding what steps are needed in the improvement of the effect and role of what particle pollutant matter has brought. The community can step up in monitoring and being a watchdog, mainly because this is a direct effect of their community being affected. Air quality standards must consistently be reviewed and changed according to the statistics shown. Strong standards must be adopted to protect ones health and the environment. People will have to make sure their voices are heard and present a united front by being vocal to congress and participating in community activities that focus on the elimination of the dangers of pollutant matter. By showing consciousness and awareness a lot of things can
