The Emergency Room Bill Clinton was President and everyone I knew had a beeper. It was Labor Day weekend 1993. I was a Private First Class in the United States Army; I was 20 years old and single. I was stationed at Fort Bliss Texas in El Paso. The summer just ended and I was about to enjoy a nice four day weekend. The great thing about being in the Army is all the federal holidays you get off not to mention the added training holidays. In 1993 the style was to have big hair and I followed that fad with a vengeance. I had blond highlights with a spiral permanent, otherwise known as a perm. My hair was just past my shoulders. This was the first time I could remember having a nice hair style. My entire childhood I was the kid with the bad hair cut every picture day. That being said I was pretty vain about my hair. That weekend started like any other, everyone in the barracks were just hanging out talking about what and where the place to go that night was. I had a boyfriend and best friend. They usually didn’t agree about where we would go out on the weekends. I didn’t really care, I just wanted to go out and have fun. I guess that may have been why I would forget I had been have some really bad headaches over the past few weeks. I would just take some Advil or Tylenol or some other kind of pain killer. This is just to let you know that this was the most likely reason why I passed out. When I woke up, Sylvia my best friend was driving me to William Beaumont Army medical Center. The hospital associated with Fort Bliss that had an emergency room. I felt as if I was having an out of body experience as I watched the nurses wheel me into the emergency room. I kept losing track of time, almost as if time no longer existed. The next time I woke up I was practically naked except one of those hospital gowns that do not close, and I was attached to
