If the painting were to be cut in half we would be able to see approximately the same amount of lilies on one side as well as the other. This would also be true for the young native girl, the way her feet are positioned and the extension of her arms allows to see how symmetrical the painting is. The painting also has many organic lines and shapes; the massive flowers have curved lines and are two-dimensional. On the other hand the stems of the lilies have vertical lines, the vertical lines make our eyes look up at the large lilies. On the other hand the scale and proportion of the lilies are not accurate to reality.
The lighting helps the viewers to see more details of the work, in terms of settings, narratives, characters and objects. The dim and soft tone with the shade at the background, gives an extra depth to the painting, which makes the whole setting more natural and
In both Henri Matisse’s Le Bonheur de Vivre (The Joy of Life) and Vasily Kandinsky’s Sketch I for “Composition VII” the artists use similar techniques/styles in color, but use different techniques when it comes to brushstroke, line, and spacing. Both are outstanding works of art that reflect not only modernism but also the artistic movements that encompass them. They are also more different than alike. Matisse and Kandinsky both use a vibrant color pallet in their paintings, with rich primary colors, and some hints of other rich secondary (and a few tertiary) colors. The colors are used to show different forms and they draw the eye around the paintings.
The subjects are placed in the center to emphasize the figures and the pair is set in the foreground. The bodies are positioned to form almost a singular figure to create the largest visual aspect of the painting. The composition of the painting is very compact to draw focus on the large forms in the foreground. Relative to the canvas, the subjects fill up a majority of the frame, again, to emphasize the countess and her daughter. The colors used in the painting are very warm and earthy.
The used of red and green and yellow adds contracts as red and green are on the opposite side of the color wheel. According to Laurie Schneider Adams author of History of Western Art, “They [complementary colors] are often juxtaposed when a strong eye-catching contrast is desired” (17). The gold, red, and green are warm and bright and add a sense of pop to the paining as the colors contrast the cooler blues and browns in the background. The symmetrical composition that this group of figure creates is very well balanced. Raphael like many other Renaissance artists uses geometric design to create balance and symmetry.
It is similar however due to the very neutral colors being used in the painting. There is a lot of while and black and then brown hues, red hues, some yellow hues and some green/blue hues, however they are all very dark in value and it gives a black and white feel to the painting. Another similarity is the perspective. The perspective in the photograph is very similar to that of the painting, where you have the dead men in the foreground and the horizon in the background both having similar vanishing points and points of view. Another similarity is value of the sky and the foreground.

The patterns used are nature inspired with things like plants and flowers and feathers all used. This suggests she is thinking about beautiful things and might just want to be amongst the natural world. Art Criticism Task By: YD The painting I chose is by Greg Conley, it’s called “The Path Chosen”. By looking at the painting you can tell that the artist used a lot of different techniques to make it look unique, realistic and attractive. The artist used the technique wet-in-wet to slightly blur the painting. He also used the technique dry brush which is the opposite of the wet in wet technique, for it makes things very crisp and hard edged; this technique makes features come forward. In addition he used the method flat wash which is using one solid color (yellow in this case) from top to bottom.
This drawing was drawn on light blue paper. Degas used the dry media pastel. The drawing has some visual texture in the form of pattern. The womans dress has vertical stripes on her dress in red and green that catch the eye. This balance creates heavy visual weight for eye to follow up to her face.
In comparing Cimabue’s Madonna Enthroned with Angels and Prophets and Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned, the artists’ main idea of painting Mary enthroned is same, however the form used for the subject matter differs. The most important thing to note is that both artists paint with a Gothic and Byzantine style with their characteristics of a gold background and noticeable halos. When contrasting these two pieces of art, the main difference is the placement of the figures in each painting. In Cimabue’s painting, the angels are depicted around the throne with each row at different levels. This causes the angels to appear as if they are stacked on top of one another, unlike Giotto’s painting.
