Elise Smart The Issue: - Elise Smart is an IT Manager at Millenium Insurance who is working on a performance assessment for one of her subordinates, Darlene Ketchum - the IT division recently went through significant organizational changes due to increased use of PCs and associated software within the company; this req'd support services, that were initially very unorganized and unhelpful to end users - the IT department was separated into 3 divisions, and Elise was put in charge of a group of 12 that provided PC User Education and Support; under Elise's direction, the unit was judged to be successful in providing PC support services (reduced questions through the development of self help tools and increased metrics for management reporting) - senior management wanted Elise to consider whether it was cost effective to have separate helpdesks for PC users and everything else - Elise delegated this assignment to Darlene, who was a high performer historically and had expressed interest in moving into management - Darlene agreed to this project before going on mat leave, started when she came back, in addition to running regular PC Support Staff meetings - team members saying that Darlene is asking them to volunteer for her tasks, she denies this but has not produced any objective deliverables on large project - Elise must decide on performance rating between Unsatisfactory and Outstanding Questions: 1. What factors should Elise take into account in deciding what performance rating she should give Darlene? - performance assessment scale as devised by the company, because it's important to maintaining credibility to the system that all employees are held to the same standards - maternity leave should not be a consideration in a formal assessment - H: Even though we are evaluating her current year performance, I think thought should also be given to her
