3/25/14 Sociology through Film Mr. Brenard Elephant Man Vocab Status - The relative position or standing of somebody or something in a society or other group. Achieved Status - social importance within a culture that somebody gains through personal effort rather than by inheriting it. Ascribed Status - the status that somebody possesses by reason of age, sex, ethnic background, family background, or another factor outside personal control. Master Status - A position that is so central to the identity of the individual that it overshadows all other statuses. Alienation - A withdrawing or separation of a person or a person's affections from an object or position of former attachment. Deviance - behavior that is sharply different from a customary, traditional, or generally accepted standard. Labeling - An item used to identify something or someone, as a small piece of paper or cloth attached to an article to designate its origin. Stereotype - an oversimplified standardized image of a person or group Stigma - sign of social unacceptability: the shame or disgrace attached to something regarded as socially unacceptable. Role Conflict - A situation in which a person is expected to play two incompatible roles. Segregation - the practice of keeping ethnic, racial, religious, or gender groups separate, especially by enforcing the use of separate schools, transportation, housing, and other facilities, and usually discriminating against a minority group. Inequality - Social or economic disparity between people or groups. Disenfranchised - To deprive a person or organization of a privilege, immunity, or legal right, especially the right to vote.
