“Chug, Chug, Chug” The drinking age should be lowered to 18 years of age. This change will reduce the drinking among young people. Allowing young adults consume alcohol in controlled environments such as restaurant, taverns, pubs, official schools, and universities functions. By implementing this responsible drinking can be taught through role modeling and educational programs. This opinion was based upon research made by Ruth C. Engs, Professor, Applied Health Sciences, Indiana University, and she has been involved in for over twenty years concerning college age and the drinking history in the U.S.A and other cultures. Although to buy alcohol you have to be 21 years of age, majority of college consumer are under this age and do it in an irresponsible manner. This is because many see this as a “badge of rebellion against authority” or as other see it a “forbidden fruit” or a symbol of “adulthood”. From there we get the “binge” drinkers or heavy drinkers which consume 5 drinks at least once a week. Example, 22% of all students under 21 compared to 18% over 21 years of age are heavy drinkers. Research done from the early 1980’s until present time has shown a decrease in drinking and driving and on university students a decrease in consumption. The result of the decrease of drinking and driving is due to several factors besides the rise in age purchase. These include: education about drunk driving, designated driver programs, increase in seatbelt and air bag usage, safer cars, lower speed limits, and free taxi
