Electric Powered Vehicles: A New Era Introduction Electric powered vehicles first began to be developed in the United States in the late 1890's. The design and manufacture of electric vehicles would continue for another quarter century but soon would be replaced with gasoline powered vehicles. Most all of the automobile manufactures today are directing research toward electric vehicles, with several companies such as Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Honda, Tesla and General Motors actually producing all-electric vehicles for the consumer market. (Deal III, 2010). Electric powered vehicles are on their way back from the past moving into the present offering more qualities than before with continued improvements to battery technology, fast forwarding into the future becoming the new "it" of the automobile industry. Primarily because people want an alternative to gasoline and they also want a cleaner more healthier environment. Let us all fasten our seatbelts as we watch technology advance enough for every driveway in America to be home of the electric powered vehicle. What is an Electric Vehicle? One might ask what is an electric vehicle? According to the (Dept. of Energy, 2013), "an electric vehicle is an automobile that is propelled by an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery pack instead of an internal combustion engine." Also, an electric vehicle runs off of electricity while a gasoline powered vehicle runs off of gas. An electric vehicle also has a regenerative braking system as opposed to an anti-locking brake system that is found in gas powered vehicles. Electric Powered Vehicles: A New Era The regenerative braking system works with the battery pack to help recharge the battery as the brakes are applied.
