Then you stroke the nail repeatedly in the same direction with the strong magnet. This makes all the domains in the material face the right way as when the nail was stroked in the same direction the domain in the nail faced that way making it magnetic. You need more than 50% of the domains to face the right way to make it magnetised. You can also make a magnet more powerful by freezing a magnet and which makes all the domains stay in the right direction for longer. There are many ways to de-magnetise a permanent magnet. One way is to heat the magnet beyond its curie point which scrambles the domains of the magnet and de-magnetises it.
