A: In 1860 the election to choose a new U.S. president occurred bringing forth many questions involving states rights, uneasiness due to previous events (such as John Brown’s raid and execution), etc. Republican, Abraham Lincoln won the election. This is a major point because of how he won and the circumstances. He won with 40 percent of the popular vote and about 60 percent of electoral vote. Yet, he had no votes from the South. This was mostly because his name wasn’t even on the ballot in most of the southern states. This had actually helped show to Americans that there were no longer any national political parties. They had two presidential candidates compete for southern votes, and the other two candidates compete for northern and western votes. This became the break of the North and South. p. 348 Lincoln Wins the Election Q: How did Lincoln win the election? Were Americans pleased with his victory? A: He had actually benefitted from the fracturing among the other political parties. He won with 40 percent of popular vote and 60 percent of electoral vote. Unfortunately, not everyone was actually happy with his victory. The south had seceded from the US, not wanting to be under the presidential rule of Lincoln. They didn’t like the fact that he advocated for the abolishment of slavery. They didn’t even want him to win in the first place, going as far as to exclude him from the ballots in the South. p. 350 Southern States Leave the Union Q: Why did the Southern States leave the Union? A: The South seceded from the Union because of the North's views on slavery. The South needed the slave work force for economic reasons and the North did not want it at all. So
