Overcrowding creates a domino effect on most large urban areas. This domino effect begins as large masses of people move into a big city in search of wealth, community, and safety. As the number of citizens increase noise, and the density of the population grow larger. Territoriality, privacy, and personal space become issues with the common man. The cities grow larger and occupy all available space to accommodate newcomers to the area. Natural settings are replaced by building and other architectural structures to provide amenities to the residents of the urban area. The following paper has been written in an attempt to explain the ramifications of population density and noise in the urban environment. Concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space Within the scope of population density several factors encompass the sustainability of large urban areas. Estimates show that around half of the world’s population will live in large cities by 2015 (Urban Environments and Human Behavior, 2004). Territoriality, privacy, and personal space are three of these important factors. Characteristics of cities are composed of culture, ethnic groups, religion, economic status, and social diversity that create stressful living conditions (Urban Environments and Human Behavior, 2004). This wide array of social issues exposes people to a multitude of environmental stressors daily causing people living in large cities to adjust their behavior in reference to territoriality, privacy, and personal space.
