The Effects of Television on Young Children Ashley Brewer Keiser University Abstract This paper will summarize and explore how too much television viewing can affect young children. Television viewing during childhood is associated with attention disorders as well as fewer social skills. Too much exposure is a huge risk factor for behavioral problems, leading to relational problems as well in children of an early age. Once the child reaches the age of 5, the content that is being watched becomes more the issue. It has been proven that children 5 and older, who are exposed to violence on television, become less socially aware and suffer from more behavioral problems than those children who were not exposed. It has been concluded that high amounts of television viewing is associated with poor social skills and fewer peer relationships among youth. Some informational television can have a positive effect on student achievement, in children older than two and if channeled correctly. A large proportion of a child’s daily food and energy intake is consumed during television viewing. As childhood obesity has increased in America, so has the amount of television viewing and other media in children’s lives. In the same aspect, the media also plays a huge role in the formation of self-image for young people today. In today’s society it is almost impossible to avoid any type of media. There are billboards at almost every mile marker down every interstate. Every vehicle comes equipped with a radio, and today, almost every home in America has a television. Even more so, most of today’s American’s have a television in multiple rooms and whether society wants to admit it or not, everyone is impacted or influenced
