Social Media Social media has become a big part of our everyday life, whether it’s looking at pictures on Facebook, updating a status on Twitter, or simply for business networking on LinkedIn. Social media brings people together from every corner of the globe. It is a great way of connecting with old friends or looking for that next great job. On the opposite spectrum social media is also receiving a lot of criticism for having a detriment on society. Social media has definitely revamped the social aspect of society but it is inadvertently leading to the ultimate demise of physical social interaction. In the past 10 to 15 years social media has completely revolutionized society. In recent years it has played a big role in the success of many businesses because social media is a great way of marketing your business. Qualman (2010) states, social media should be an integral part of any business, big or small because it is imperative to the success of a company in today’s society. With social media it is very easy to broaden your current network base by joining a business social media webpage such as LinkedIn. LinkedIn brings business personal together who are in the same profession or it can help hirers easily determine successful candidates. Many people are way too busy in their everyday life to keep up with the latest trends in the social media world. The great thing about social media is you don’t have to keep up to date and you can still maintain a large social network of acquaintances. A survey at Michigan State University performed in 2006 was used to determine the usage of Facebook among students, what their profiles showed, and whom they were friends with.
