It is the largest leading cause of deaths in the US; it’s the cause of many different kinds of diseases and health problems. Smoking is an important risk factor for three diseases that cause most death in the world: heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. It is the cause of almost 80% lung cancer deaths and 20% of all other forms of cancer. Studies have linked smokers to cancers of the kidney, mouth, stomach, bladder, and cervix among other types of cancer. Smoking is also associated with high risks of causing reduced lung function from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Studies on smoking show that most people start smoking during teen age. As a matter of fact there are not many smokers who start smoking after the age of eighteen years and in fact most smokers start smoking or took up the habit of smoking in their early or mid-teens. Mostly at a young age they don’t think about the health risks of smoking and they also don’t have in mind that smoking can really be addictive. When they start smoking they think that they will just try smoking then leave it or even take the habit up. There are several reasons why teens start smoking. The main key cause of smoking is peer pressure. Most smokers start smoking because they have friends who do smoke. Mostly smokers start smoking so as to fit in place or to maintain a certain social status. In this some start to smoke if they have low self-esteem and also thought that smoking will get them in with the “in the crowd” and help them make friends. They also think that smoking will make them to be accepted by their peers. Those children who have their parents smoke are more likely to smoke so as to look or act like them.
