(Work release programs help inmates succeed, July/August, 2000). At least 70% of inmates in correctional facilities are in need of basic literacy skills. Only 22% of all inmates are high school graduates. Half of the inmates currently in jails and prisons committed crimes while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Fewer than half of the inmates that are currently in jails and prisons in the United States have earned more than $10,000.00 in the year before they were incarcerated.
There are fewer than three thousand students attending the county’s five elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools. The racial makeup of the county in 2000 was 56.4% White, 41.1%African America, 1.3 % Hispanic, 0.4%Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races,
Van ijzendoorn and kroonernberg conducted a meta analysis of 32 studies in 8 different countries. They found that difference between cultures were small, secure attachments was the most common in every country, followed by insecure avoidant. These cross cultural similarties support the view that attachment is innate and that different cultural practices have little effect on attachment behaviour. Another study conducted by Takahahi demonstrated differences between cultures when the strange situation was used. 60 middle-class Japanese infants 1 years old and their mothers were observed in the Strange Situation It was found that 68% of infants were classified as securely attached/ 32% as resistant-insecure / none were classified as avoidant-insecure The Japanese infants were extremely disturbed when left alone.
Although African Americans constituted almost 42% of the entire follow-up cohort, they were only 6% of those reporting any Meth use. With regard to recidivism, those who used Meth (81.6%) were significantly more likely than those who did not use Meth (53.9) to have been returned to custody for any reason or to report committing any violent acts in the 30 day prior to the follow-up interview (23.6% vs. 6.8%, respectively)." The author also provides charts to depict the
Unfortunately, this is not a valid argument since only 4 percent of the minimum wage workers are single parents. Most minimum wage earners are under 25 years of age and are not the sole breadwinner for the family. They tend to come from middle-class families, are still in school and only work part-time. Statistics shows that 79 percent of these people only work part time. Approximately 62 percent are still obtaining their education, and only 22 percent live below the national poverty line.

But even with all that funding they are not seeing very good results. Only 35 percent of American high school seniors are proficient readers. Only 23 percent are proficient in math. Only 50 percent of black and Hispanic students graduate high school in four years. After putting all those stats together it comes at no surprise
Another program is School Nurse Childhood Obesity Prevention Education (SCOPE). This program is a complete, continuing education program created by the National Association of School Nurses to provide methods for school nurses to help students, parents and their community deal with the challenges of childhood obesity (NASN). The U.S. Surgeon General’s “Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity” provides steps to prevent and decrease childhood obesity. Children need to have a thorough medical evaluation by a pediatrician to consider the possibility of a physical cause.
In 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that substance abuse statistics “among youths aged 12 to 17 remained similar from 2009 to 2010 (10.0 vs. 10.1percent), but higher than the rate in 2008 (9.3 percent)”. To help try and produce a reduction in substance abuse among children in the past, schools across America implemented prevention programs such as the most commonly recognized and still widely used D.A.R.E. program. This program, which was first conceived in 1983, is currently administered in “75 percent of our nation's school districts” (D.A.R.E., 2011). Despite this implementation however, longitudinal studies have proven that D.A.R.E.
Adoption Adoption is better than abortion, it gives many children who need a home a good home. Statistics show there are over 153 million orphans who have lost one or both parents in the United States. Of the over 400,000 children who are in foster care in the U.S., 114,556 cannot be returned to their birth families and are waiting to be adopted. On average, more than 60 percent of children in foster care spend 2-5 years in the system before being adopted. Almost 20 percent spend 5 or more years before being adopted and some never get adopted.
