Running head: MUSIC AND COMPREHENSION The Effects of Music on Reading Comprehension Acia Jackson Gardner-Webb University Abstract The habits that people use to study for a test vary between each individual. Some people feel the need to listen to music while other requires complete silence. People who tend to listen to music while they study say that listening to music makes remembering and comprehending things a little more visual for them causing studying to become easier. Even though people like to listen to music while they study we understand that everyone has different preferences too. This brings us to our research question. Does listening to different music while you study have an effect on your thought process? Our target for this study are students from a small southern university. They are students from undergraduate psychology courses ranging from the ages of 18 to 42(M= 21.63) both male and females and from all 4 class groups. We conducted an ANOVA experiment containing 3 experiment groups and 1 control group. Effects of Music on Reading Comprehension For our final research project my group and I decided to take a look at the effects of music on reading comprehension, more specifically, the effects of music on the performance of reading comprehension pertaining to short- term memory. Short-term memory, sometimes called working memory refers to a brain system that temporarily stores information we are currently aware of or thinking about (Cherry, 2011). Often times people listen to music while performing another task such as driving, cleaning, cooking, working out and even while studying. Listening to music while studying is actually a very common thing, I personally as well as a few of my friends use music to study because listening to music allows us to relate the material that we are learning but even still
