Maths is taught to children in many different ways, sometimes there can be too much emphasis on the recording of ‘sums’, if this is introduced to children too early it can slow down the pupil’s progress in thinking mathematically. Maths is now taught very differently to when I was in school, because there is more emphasis now in how you arrive at the answer and finding different methods of arriving at the correct answer particularly in the early primary phase. Showing the children different methods of arriving at the answer improves their investigation skills. The mathematics curriculum is intended to give the children a better understanding of numeracy.
Reflection on Liebeck and Skemp Reflecting on my readings of Skemp, R. (1989) Mathematics in the Primary School, and Liebeck, P. (1990) How Children Learn Mathematics. I have reflected on the importance of Mathematics in the world around us as human beings and how it is taught within our schools. Skemp asks the question ‘Why is Mathematics still a problem subject for so many?’ One of the theories put forward is that the teaching of Maths is seen as satisfying teachers and adults by children achieving ticks for their mathematical work passing exams without fully understanding the subject. However children are achieving this through rote, a form of habitual learning. Intelligent learning is adaptable achieving the answer by way of different procedures or routes (building up knowledge) in understanding how to figure out the problem by a variety of schemas.
Children do not need expensive toys. Toys should be appealing to engage the child over a period of time. Information and resources are provided in this report so pediatricians can give parents advice about selecting toys. Children learn from the time they are born, and parents/guardians are primarily responsible for providing quality experiences from which their children learn. Parents often ask their pediatrician for advice about appropriate toys, books, and computer or video games, because they know that these tools may be important in their child’s development.

First a student must be able to construct explanations, and secondly they must be able to utilize critical thinking skills through the use of mathematics, information and computer technology and computational thinking. As an effective teacher one must be able to communicate the value of these skills to their students and show the value of being thorough with both of these steps. When teaching a student about constructing explanations it is important to understand what the purpose of the explanation is trying to say; being thorough is going to be the best option as the more details that are available the more likely the person reviewing the experiment will understand what was trying to be done.

While a teacher teaches one way which might be long-term for a student, the student might find a different short-term way to solve their problem or equation. This is the kind of mathematics that most parents and government officials recognize as the curricula that they attempted to learn when they were in school.

Students sometime are not aware that the two subjects have a close connection. There are areas that math can be associated such as problem solving, practicing measurements, interpreting data which can be shown in charts, graphs and tables. “When mathematics is incorporated into a science lesson, the two disciplines complement each other in such a way that the learning of both science and mathematics is enhanced” (Sherrod, Dwyer & Narayan, 2009, p. 248).

This make's the child very happy and like to continue or add more to what they have done. It also makes them feel good about themselves. Praises are very important when working with children because it also helps the develop their morals. Negative behaviour will be ignored as long as there is no health and safety risk. A tantrum will be ignored by the teachers but if a child is expressing negative behaviour such as hitting, they will then be told to stop in a firm voice (not shouting) Vygotsky - Adults should provide a play based curriculum and engage with children in play activities to extend their learning.
It makes them feel like you understand them better. I think this is great because children should always feel comfortable in the classroom to share anything with you. Home visits really help you see the children in a whole different view and makes you understand them, not only as a student better, but as a person. I would recommend doing home visits with children, as long as safety is not an issue, to any future teacher or teacher in the classroom
