When aiming to teach the whole child it is important to take a holistic approach. We must look at how we are teaching, the environment in which we are teaching, including the setup of the classroom and the resources we use, and of course who we are teaching (both collectively and individually). Teachers not only have to consider teaching academic subject matter, but also need to take into account student wellbeing and pastoral care. In 2004 The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development developed six Principles of Learning and Teaching with the aim of making sure that all of these factors are factored in and to assist teachers in developing effective pedagogical practices. Today I am going to look at these Principles and examine their relationship with classroom resources, pastoral care and learning theories. 1. The learning environment is supportive and productive Social emotional programs. Kids Matter website full of resources for social and emotional learning, including programs like Bounce Back and Friendly Kids, Friendly Classrooms. Resilience and social responsibility (being part of a community. “KidsMatter Primary provides the proven methods, tools and support to help schools work with parents and carers, health services and the wider community, to nurture happy, balanced kids.” Social environment within the school. Own attitude. Safe supported. Teaching emotional resilience. Know and value each student. 2. The learning environment promotes independence, interdependence and self-motivation. Collaboration and student led learning. The setup of the classroom is vital to this. Tables where small groups of children face each other encourage collaboration. Teaching style.
