Effect of juvenile convict cichlid predation on the parental and aggressive behaviours of parent convict cichlids, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum. Eric Wormsbecher 250 526 483 Thursday November 29, 2012 Lab section #: 006 Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the effect of different numbers of predators on the parental and aggressive behaviours of convict cichlids. We expected that aggressive acts would be more frequent when more predators are present and that males would perform the majority of aggressive acts and females would focus mainly on parental behaviour. Paired convict cichlids were placed in tanks with their offspring and the frequency of parental and aggressive behaviours were recorded. In the second part of the experiment, 2 or 4 juvenile cichlids were added to separate but attached tanks as predators, and the parental and aggressive behaviours were recorded. There was no significant change in parental or aggressive behaviours, yet there was a general increase in aggressive behaviours as the number of predators increased. There was no significant difference in behaviour between sexes, but previous research suggests females are more devoted to investment in offspring perhaps to enhance protection. Introduction: What does it mean to invest in offspring? The concept of allocating time and resources to someone other than oneself seems to have been around for ages and a number of different species have made adaptations in attempts to increase individual fitness in the next generation. There are different methods of providing parental care that can be chosen by parents. In humans, both sexes generally invest significant effort and resources to the health and safety of their offspring, though in some cases it is solely the male, or female that provides care. The majority of fish species do not provide any parental care at all, however there
