Written Thesis Defense - Geography (1800-1850) The Mississippi River was the most important geographical feature in the United States between the time periods of 1800-1850 because it provided America great support and prosperity and without it, America would not be existent today. The Mississippi River acted as a border line between the United States and the French’s Louisiana Territory which President Thomas Jefferson purchased through a treaty with France in 1803 and buying the great mass of land helped the United States in many ways, but the United States would not have purchased the territory if it were not for the Mississippi River. Other geographical features in the United States were not significant at all compared to the Mississippi River, which helped provide numerous benefits for the country, because they provided less of an impact on America. If the Mississippi River did not exist in the continent of North America then the United States would never have accepted the offer made by France to buy the Louisiana Territory because the main reason of Jefferson’s acceptance and purchase of the land was just to obtain the Port of New Orleans. The Port of New Orleans at the bottom of the Mississippi River made America wish to a buy only the Port of New Orleans for seven million dollars from the French because it would greatly benefit the United States financially by being able to trade with Asia easily. France did not accept this offer, but offered to sell much more land than the United States wanted for a very small price which still included the Port of New Orleans which is why Jefferson decided to sign a treaty in order to purchase the territory. If the Mississippi River was nonexistent, then there would not have been any Port of New Orleans so Jefferson would have declined France’s offer.
