Mitchell Heyne Composition 2 January 7, 2014 Unit 3 Assignment 1 Summary Response Paper “Wow, this isn’t a bad article” I said to myself as I was reading “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” The point of this article is that people are losing the ability to concentrate for long periods of time, especially if they have no interest in the subject. Some people see this as a mental disorder, however, this is due to people trying to look for a quick fix and not doing the thorough research. I will agree that the way people are thinking is indeed changing, some for the good, but most for the bad as well. Search engines are rerouting our memory. According to one article in Science magazine, we're not necessarily losing our ability to remember things.
However, it is the type of monitoring that the author and I disagree on. The Undercover Parent raised the question of, does responsibility rest with the child or the parent? The type of Spyware Harlan Coben was referring to is the kind that makes an accessible log to every keystroke made on the computer. I felt many times throughout the essay he did not thoroughly review all of his options before proposing the software. It seemed his thirst for relief overpowered his reasoning.
Also digital culture and social media had made they forgot about the reality and live in a virtual life. “The Dumbest Generation” that wrote by Mark Bauerlein is one example. Bauerlein believes that digital culture and social media had cut young adults away from history, civic, literature, and fine arts. However, I have the opposite opinion; believe that digital culture actually made young adults smarter in different ways. There are many famous people including Bauerlein himself were having an argument with another group of people on whether digital culture is an advantage or not.
While there are positive outcomes of the internet, there still exist dangerous aspects to it, such as bullying. Most people may associate bullying with images of a teenager getting slammed into a locker, or getting their lunch money stolen. People may also think that it extends to name calling, teasing, and insults. Bullying has existed for a long time, with some adults thinking that it is a normal part of growing up, that teaches young adults to toughen up and have a thick skin, thinking this will help when they become adults. However, with the advancement in technology and its wide use, a new type of bullying has developed, cyberbullying, which is when a person uses technology and/or electronic devices to bully another person, typically by sending messages or posting comments of an intimidating or threatening nature.
Some might argue that the invention of aspirin has hurt the human body because it enables the body to heal the headache internally. Technology has made the ability to multitask functions in a single device. We can have multifunctional use a single device to anything we want it to do. We can talk on the cellphone while texting and surfing the web. The simpler the work gets with technology, the more we get dependent on it.

Some people want laws in effect for the real world to protect their rights to their belongings. Theft in the virtual world occurs quite often. In an article titled, “Should Gamers be Prosecuted for Virtual Stealing?” the author Alex Weiss calls out a young teenage boy who is being prosecuted for stealing in a video game. It seems to be a legal blunder that is very straight forward, but becomes a heated debate.
Technology Drugs, sex, and alcohols are the big no-no in our society. They say that it’ll sabotage one’s future, but what about the daily utensils we’re using every day? Every one of us uses technology every day, every second of our life; yet we don’t know the harm it brings to our society. From just wearing glasses to playing video games on your PC, we are the slaves of technology. Why is technology so harmful to us?

Research Problem In a situation where technology is rampant, virtual lives would undoubtedly merge or collide with real life relationships, resulting in interpersonal relationships that could have stemmed from the virtual landscape. However, does the decrease in the face-to-face and more personal course of interactions affect the quality of relationships, or do they serve to enhance the relationships instead? As such, this increases the relevance of our research project in order to understand how to best use the reality and virtual landscape that could help strengthen our current relationships, whilst paving the way for new ones.
