People chew gum for many reasons. Whether to freshen their breath or to blow bubbles, they’re probably not thinking about its effects on their oral health. You can actually chew your way to good health with sugarless gum. Truth is, it’s actually good for your teeth provided that it’s sugarless and your jaw joints and muscles are comfortable. Dentists all over the world agree that sugar-free chewing gums with xylitol content are likely to have a beneficial influence on oral health. Xylitol is a naturally occurring alcohol found in most plant material. Xylitol cannot be broken down by bacteria, so no enamel-destroying acid is produced. Sugar-free gum sweetened with xylitol has been shown to reduce cavities and plaque because xylitol appears to inhibit bacterial growth, including growth of Streptococcus mutans -- the main bacteria implicated in dental decay. The sweetener sorbitol has the same benefit, but is only about one-third as effective as xylitol.
