Nicholas DeGon October 18, 2014 English 101 MWF 9:00-9:50 How 9/11 Effected American Security As Americans we will never forget the day September 11, 2001. On this tragic day, 19 terrorists that were associated with the Islamic terrorist called al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and committed suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers at the World Trade Center in New York City, the third plane crashed into Pentagon outside, and the fourth plane crashed into a large field in Pennsylvania. During the attack 3,000 people were killed including more than 400 police officers and firefighters. If people were asked about this day they will most likely remember what they were doing the exact moment when America was attacked and most of them are still looking for closure. 9/11 will never be forgotten as it left a scar and affected America in countless ways, but something’s that were significantly effected is airport security, land security, and the United States military. One major way 9/11 effected the way we travel is airport security. Before 9/11 there were no mandatory security procedures or organization to ensure a safe flight. After the tragic event it was not a surprise airport security would be taken more serious. On December 10, 2011, the Transportation Security Administration was established and took over all security regulations for flying. Today travelers must arrive at the airport at least two hours before their flight is scheduled to take off. Many restrictions have been made on what travelers can bring. Liquids and essentials have to be a certain size and placed in clear zip lock bag. Passengers are not allowed to have any food or beverages when going through security process.
