The movie, Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton is about a machine-like man with Scissors for hands Edward, coming into a whole new community bringing change, by change I mean individuality an element the community did lack. One important character in my view was Joyce. She gave the impression her life in the community needed change, a change in her excruciatingly dull routine. She loathed the thought of getting with other men. Her need is for change and difference is what I’ll be focusing on as it proves to be quite a powerful idea. When we see her flirting, purposely showing herself off in a sexual manner, I was left with one idea: Variety is the spice of life. An important scene that shows Joyce’s true colors is in her first scene with the plumber, it shows her need to want a change to her normal routine as she shuts out Peg who comes by to come sell her some of her products interrupting her small talk with the man. Her blunt attitude towards Peg revealed through the shutting of the door from an over the shoulder angle view, proved that she didn’t want to waste any time with Peg if that meant losing time with this man, as he proved to be a change in her house-wife routine. This man though small and really uncalled for, did prove that any change no matter how small or meaningless was a welcomed by her. Us humans we remember things that are new, our memory is defined by uniqueness, by individual events that stand out in the constant routine our daily lives. That is why I thought this scene was particularly powerful in proving this. What is the spice of life? Changing our daily routines. Throughout the rest of the film Joyce is hooked onto this mysterious figure who appears with Peg, interested in finding out what little secret Peg is hiding she rudely implies or pressures her into arranging a BBQ to welcome their new ‘Guest’. At the BBQ they meet Edward
