This essay will discuss several socio-educational issues imbedded in the School and Society textbook. The focus of this paper centers on the first five chapters of the text. Were we will compare how the issues relate to today’s current practice in today’s school and society. In chapter one, we will look at the Athenian Political Economy and how society provided for participation of citizens in government, and expected the education experience fit citizens for that responsibility. Chapter 2 will focus on Jefferson’s plan for popular Education and his proposed four tier educational structure.

Dude You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School (2012), by sociologist C.J. Pascoe, is a discourse on the exploration of schools as a socializing institution for boys concerning the formation of their masculine identities. Pascoe’s discussion was based on the results of 18 months of ethnographic research that took place in a racially diverse middle-class suburban high school in northern California. The goal of her study was to “explain how teenagers, teachers, and the institutional logics of schooling construct[ed] adolescent masculinity through idioms of sexuality” (4). Being Hispanic must mean that I am an illegal immigrant from Cuba or Mexico. Being Hispanic must mean that when there’s an increase in poverty, crime and teen pregnancies, I must have something to do with it, or my mom must have debuted on Dr. Phil screaming at her “baby daddy” for child support. And of course, when applying to a scholarship for being Hispanic, the essay topic would be to write about the challenges in my life and how I overcame them, because you know, I am Hispanic and therefore my life has to be complicated. I must have had a set of obstacles that others don’t and risen above.
Disproportionate Minority Representation in Special Education: St. Paul School District Abstract This paper is written for the purposes of a sociology graduate seminar, Social Organization. Institutionalism and Resource Dependency Theory are utilized to set the framework for disproportionate representation of minority students in special education. Disproportionate numbers of minority students have and will continue to be academically grouped in special education if academic scholarship is not exposing the shortcomings of the institution. Given this national problem, this study is designed to investigate aspects of funding and student evaluations to identify the structural problems that face special education departments, specifically in St. Paul Minnesota. Unobtrusive and qualitative research will be conducted to answer the overarching questions associated to the theoretical framework: (1) If special education programs are not successful for minorities, why are they still being utilized?
