The University of La Verne’s core values have been present in my life throughout the years. Even though my mother wanted to attend college as I did, she didn’t have the option to so and that’s why she encourages me to try my hardest in school. When my mother was young, she dreamed of attending college in the United States and getting a job so she could support her family, whereas when I was small, I didn’t think school was important. Although my mother only attended elementary school, school was one of her top priorities because she felt like it was an honor to go to school, and if you went to school, you were considered to be lucky. My mother was an over-achiever and saw education as a way of showing that she was better than most.
My second oldest sister was never a big fan of school. She believed she was not smart enough and that school was way too hard for her. She got pregnant by the age of 19 years old; she became a young, and happy mother. Her decision of starting a family at a young age was always part of her plans; she had wanted this all along. Her choice was never based on how school made her feel but on how she felt.

As a mother of four children she wanted to make a difference in young girls in her village in Africa. Leymah was born and raised in Africa in a small village in north Liberia. Many the kids her age did not pursue their education; they never took it serious. She was one out of many of her peers who excelled in the ninth grade.
Since women weren’t allowed to be as free as the men they were forced to learn how to only live inside their homes. Kamila notices that money is running out, she knows that her as the oldest one has to find a way to get money coming in the home. She can’t attend an elite university like she planned too due to the Islamic rules, so while sitting for days thinking for a way to work from inside her home, she finally has a brilliant idea. She decided to become a seamstress. Not only would she able to work from her living room but her sisters would be able to help too.

At the time, Nai (the second oldest child) and her older sister were caring for their younger brothers and sisters as her parents were usually absent. Being placed in foster care was extremely difficult for the siblings, who were separated and sent to live in different counties. As she suffers from finding a stable income and house for her family, Moody’s mother Toosweet encourages Moody to do well in school. However, her push to ensure Moody to succeed in school is only to prove to her husband Raymond’s family that her daughter is as smart as his family, not encourage Moody to attend college and fight for her rights. As a child, Moody was unaware of the oppression and inequality that African Americans had suffered. As she constantly questioned her concerns to her mother about the incidents that occurred, her mother always told her, “Just do your work like you don’t know anything” (Moody, 123). She realizes that her mother ignores the racial acts against her community and becomes alienated within her family as well as her community when she fights for her rights.
