Education encourages students to question and criticize, and therefore does little to promote social harmony. Does education threaten social harmony by encouraging students to question and criticize? The speaker contends so, in that spirit of questioning may hinders people from seeing meaningful similarities in society and hence tend to bring about discord or even riots. However, in my view rational criticism not only protects society from serious accidents, but also helps prevent dictatorship and despotism. Admittedly, undue criticism may carry negative or even dangerous consequences to societal peace, since it is likely to inhibit policies of a government from being implemented. I am not saying that each policy conceived by a government is consistent with social demand. However, most of them, in general, are intended to serve the public good, hence should be embraced. Consider the case of genetic modified food or GM food. Criticism never ceases to point out the potential harm that GM food poses to public health there were even several cases in which hostility goes to such an extent that some extremists physically confronted the scientists carrying out genetic engineering experiments and burned the laboratories and experimental fields. Yet, it is the very GM maize that helps African people survive drought and starvation. Had the scientists feared the accusations, genetic modified crops might never have come into being and the problem of world wide food shortage may never be solved. Therefore, it is imperative for the public to support correct governmental policies and decisions. Some may argue that judgment of the correctness of governments' policy is usually quite difficult. Nevertheless, it is on the very spirit of doubt that rationality and logic thinking depends, which helps measure governmental policies as well as eliminate social disorders. Consider
