Heroes of EDSA People Power 1 By TEDDY MONTELIBANO February 24, 2011, 7:23pm MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-five years ago, the Philippines secured a triumphant milestone in world history when a spontaneous move by a sea of humanity swarmed over a stretch of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), defying the presence of tanks, fighter jets, and uniformed armed soldiers deployed by the forces of then strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos – a move which resonated through the country and subsequently resulted in the collapse of Marcos’ over two-decade autocratic hold of the country. That mass action has forever been marked indelibly in the pantheon of democracy as People Power revolution, synonymously linked in reference to the Philippines and a people’s courageous act in bringing a formidable dictatorship to its knees, with nary a life lost in the process. Mrs. Corazon C. Aquino was the unlikely heroine who took on her assassinated husband, former Senator Benigno S. Aquino’s nemesis, Ferdinand E. Marcos. Many of those who surrounded Mrs. Aquino to shield her from dangers posed by the daunting Marcos machinery rose to prominence, along with Mrs. Aquino’s own ascension to power and even beyond her term as President. Joker Arroyo, who had been Sen. Aquino’s human rights lawyer, became her Executive Secretary and then later, served three full terms as a congressman, and became senator. Mrs. Aquino’s Press Secretary and one of the most intellectually gifted in her official family, her brilliant speechwriter, and loyal friend until she died on Aug. 1, 2009, Teodoro L. Locsin Jr. succeeded Joker Arroyo as congressman representing Makati’s 1st District, serving in that position for three full terms.
