“Is all that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream?” This line comes from A Dream Within a Dream poem written by Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Poe was an American author, poet, editor and literally critic also serving in the military for a good amount of his life where he was later he purposely court-marshaled himself out of West Point. He was one of the few entrepreneurs who tried to make a stable living off of writing alone; this resulted in a hard financial life and work career. His main goal throughout life was just to become a writer, he was successful in being able to publish volumes of his work it was not until later in life that Poe showed his true capability. His poems have intrigued the readers by his emotional depths within the text and the actual content of them, how he seemed to pull every reader in with topics that were too scared to think about to ourselves. The speaker of the poem is Edgar himself and he speaks to us as we watch through this battle with his self. He says “I” many times throughout the poem such as “I stand amid the roar” so we know that it is Poe talking throughout this poem. By him being the speaker of the poem we read as he comes to the conclusion that everything and everyone that he loves was a dream, that his subconscious mind filled his life with the emotions that he felt he was suppose to feel. Only now he is seeing the illusion that has plagued his life for everything that he held to be true, that through this illusion everything was alright but now as he watches the people he loves pass away he sees the ugly reality behind it all. Poe speaks in the poem as if we were there a ghost in the distance, something he is trying to reach out to and slowly we are disappearing from him. “Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now…You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream;”, These verse
