Degradation of the biophysical environment during the 20th century led to the growth and development of innovative ideas of human relationships with the environment. The mid-20th century saw the birth of environmental education movements, and during the last few decades of the 20th century, international thinking moved towards more complex views of environmental education as having deeply interconnected political, social, and economic dimensions. Some of these organisations are: * The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in 1971, concerned with the world’s diminishing resources and wildlife. * The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 1961, formed to raise funds for wildlife conservation. * United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in 1946, which was initially concerned only with education in a development context, and later became part of the process of developing environmental education. * The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (1972) was a milestone in the development of environmental education on a global scale as it was the first time that the rich and poor nations had come together to discuss matters of environmental concern. This conference led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEP and Unesco organised the first International Workshop on Environmental Education in 1975, and thereafter the first Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education held at Tbilisi in 1997.
