The Ecuadorean Rose Industry By Adrian R. Robinson Post University Abstract The Ecuadorean Rose industry has unique production advantages, which allows it to be a world leader in rose production. Ecuadorean Roses can be found from Europe to the US, but who benefits from their sale and who suffers because of it? Does the export of roses benefit Ecuador and at what cost? How should the international community address health concerns for the Ecuadorean rose workers? These and other questions will be addressed through this essay. . 20 years ago a new industry was introduced to Ecuador. The Rose industry became a staple for there society. Now Ecuador has become one of the largest producers of roses in the world. With such a high demand for roses internationally Ecuador rose producers have been accused of cutting corners when it comes to worker safety. Although the production of roses has given great monetary benefits to the people of Ecuador does it come at a greater cost? (Hill, 2013). First let us examine how Ecuador has such an advantage when it comes to the production of roses. Ecuador is situated in the Andes Mountains. The rose farms are situated on fields below volcanoes. The high elevation and fertile volcanic soil, is what gives the Ecuadorean Rose growers their advantages and makes their roses some of the most sought after in the world. Many of these roses end up in America and in Europe where they are sold by flower shops and grocery Stores alike. By selling the higher quality roses the owners of the flower shops will benefit monetarily because he is selling a superior product.
