TELEVISION SCRIPT Program: “Lights, Camera, Action” Topic: The movie Philadelphia and how it draws upon archetypal characters and patterns Interviewer: Sonya Parer Guest: Nina Clarke Broadcast Date: Tuesday, 6th November 2012 (TITLE SCREEN “LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION) Interviewer: Welcome back to Lights, Camera, Action. Today we have movie enthusiast and literature student Nina Clarke here to discuss archetypal narratives in films. So Nina, I have a basic understanding of the term “archetype” but are you able to explain it in a little more depth in relation to film? Nina: Basically, archetypal narratives are those universal tales, which transcend through time, to the extent that we can almost place every single movie in a category with other movies of a similar storyline. Carl Jung developed the concept of the archetype to explain the commonality of dream images and symbols recognized by people regardless of place or time.
James Roday James Roday stars as Shawn Spencer on the USA Network original series PSYCH. Roday began his career studying theatre at New York University's Experimental Theatre Wing and graduated with a degree in fine arts. From there, he garnered a slew of New York theatre production credits both in classical ("The Three Sisters," "Twelfth Night," "A Respectable Wedding") and contemporary ("Severity's Mistress," "Sexual Perversity In Chicago") material. Roday went on to star in several feature film roles including Wim Wenders' "Don't Come Knocking," "Rolling Kansas" directed by Thomas Haden Church and the Warner Bros. film adaptation of "The Dukes of Hazzard" as Billy Prickett in 2005. Roday’s other credits include Jay Chandresekhar’s
Supporting notes Section 1 The practitioner that our group has chosen to use was the theatre company Kneehigh. Based in Cornwall, they use many specific features in order to tell a story to the audience and they gain their inspiration from Cornish myths, legends and fairy tales such as Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, etc. Kneehigh have a venue called The Asylum, a tent that can be configured in 5 ways and pitched in 1 day on any surface allowing them to perform on sight specific locations such as cliff tops, the Eden project, Restormel Castle. The main recurring elements in most kneehigh productions are: using the body to symbolise objects which could be seen as props and setting e.g. lamps, televisions, furniture etc.
For this theatre production project, I chose the script of Oedipus Rex. Early this “semester” when I first read the story and became familiar with different styles of directional presentations and set designs, I began haunted by the ambition to transform a “Greek Vase” into a “Timeless (in terms of style)” tale. As an architectural student, it is also very intriguing to explore new ways of “dramatic habitation”, which different from normal structures where people live their lives in normal pace, holds plays where actors and other theatre workers “live” and communicate in an accelerated rate. While the original script written by Sophocle is used, a new conception is to be realized in terms of casting, blocking, and all forms of visual designs. It is definitely a challenge to create a set with appropriate semiology (the way in which meaning is developed and conveyed), while being not just a collection of images, but a well executed expression of mood and presence which serves to enhance the unity of design and performance.

‘All the world’s at stage’. Welcome to the third annual Young Writers and Directors conference. The chosen playwright for this year’s conference in the prolific Australian playwright Louis Nowra. Cosi, the semiautobiographical text written by Louis Nowra in 1992 effectively draws in the audience in the world of the play as he achieves to portray the relationships between the characters as their world moves us into deeper understanding of his concerns. The themes Nowra demonstrates to help us understand the concerns and relationships are personal journey by self-identity and transformation, loves fidelity and infidelity and sanity vs. insanity.
