Ellison claimed that he wanted to use a special book, Thomas Jefferson’s version of the Koran. Ellison’s spokesman said, “Keith is paying respect not only to the founding fathers’ belief in religious freedom but the Constitution itself.” There is one major problem; Thomas Jefferson’s version of the Koran was used to help understand the reasoning behind the “Barbary Coast Pirates.” (Warrior 1) Ellison’s statement regarding why he chose to take his oath using the Koran was inaccurate and uneducated. Behind Ellison’s judgment, the

The stories of Cain and Abel, which is a strong basis for East of Eden, and the Garden of Eden, which is paralleled in Poisonwood Bible, are some of the first tales in which mankind was forced to choose between what they themselves wanted most (recognition for Cain and knowledge for Adam and Eve) and following the rules set forth by God. The ability to choose for oneself is a distinct ideal that Americans uphold. As Lee explains to Adam and Samuel, God did not order Cain to overcome sin, nor did he promise he would triumph over it; instead the Bible says “the word timshel—‘Thou mayest’—that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world” (Steinbeck 301). This ability to choose
The Shawshank Redemption is an old movie that reveals the power of hope through an faithful innocent prisoner, Andy Dufresne. The movie was a little ambiguous for me when I watched the movie the first time, However, How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster enlightened me and encouraged me to analysis the movie more in depth. Not only the story itself amazed me, also the settings, characterization, and diminutive details all seemed naturally and tactfully fit into the situation. Throughout the movie, a lot of examples that illustrate Thomas Foster’s techniques of reading appears. In the movie, after Andy Dufresne was put into the prison, he risked himself with life threatening to help a malicious officer all in return for some beers for his friends to drink on the roof.

The Judaizer Problem Yvonne Brock Grand Canyon University BIB 443 September 13, 2009 McRay states that “In the Dictionary of Paul and His Letters,” Scott Hafemann states that “Paul’s understanding of the Law is currently the most debated topic among Pauline scholars.” Paul was trained in Judaism and therefore he was qualified to address the problems that the Gentiles were having with understanding “The Way.” In Galatians, Paul talked about how he was set apart from his mother’s womb; therefore, he felt that he could not reject the call on his life. In Acts 26:18, Paul said that God had appointed him to open the eyes of the Gentiles. He also told them that he spent time in the desert after his conversion and did not mingle with
The Boiling Pot Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in Bible times? Or have you ever wondered about the things that were happening around the time Jesus told His stories and parables? When one thinks of the time that Jesus lived, we tend to only think of what is written in the Bible. However, there were still lives being lived and dreams being dreamed while He was on this earth. Elizabeth George Speare did an amazing job showing the struggles of living in Jesus’ time when she focused on a boy with hatred in her fictional book, The Bronze Bow.
One of Mr. Bostwicks many mantras he has us memorize is something I think really helps me and it goes a little something like this “ words make up phrases and clauses, phrases and clauses makes sentences, sentences makes paragraphs, and paragraphs makes composition.” Altogether I give mister Bostwick my SEAL of approval. I think I have done something pretty amazing in this essay I have summed up my high school English career into a 2 pages. I have had my troubles in the past. I have my troubles now. I have had a great year with Mr. Bostwick.
When looking at the lesson this week and thinking about Christians studying secular literature I have raised some of the following thoughts. According to James 1:27 “Pure religion” includes keeping ones self unspotted from the world. Then God commands us, “Be ye holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). However the word secular does not always mean that literature is evil. You could when considering the impact of reading secular literature on ones self ask the following questions.
taking my family, my home, my faith, and my young innocense. I forgive you, in a way i'm immuned to evilness. Look a little into my life, possibly read my best selling book. As you can clearly see, I have used your evilness to craft a genius work of art. I have used you, to write a book so marvelous, that i have earned myself the prestigous award; the nobel peice prize.
