Earl Riggs College writing one 10/12/11 Writing in an age of silence In this book you have Sara Paretsky telling you about different times in her life. I am going to break down each chapter and talk about the main points. Now in general I do not like memoirs but there were some great points in this book and others that were no so great and really made my mind up on memoirs. I am going to do a review on Writing in an age of silence. In the introduction she explains what it was like to grow up in the ad after WWII. I like how she gave just information about how her dad was treating her as she grew up. The reason why is because it takes a lot of guts to write that way that you care about. She also goes into some of the early American hero’s. It starts all the way back in the 1600’s when someone ran away from the law to have religious freedom. He was the one that got everyone to support the right to have freedom of religious. She also quotes different books and how they relate to her life. The American dream is now so different then what it originally was. Now it is changed to a nice little private house while each kid has their own IPod and their own computer all while having their own room. She goes into how the kids are now not acting like a family like they did when they did not have all the same technology as we do now. Warshawski. You can see, in how she describes V.I., that she is extremely feminist and that she is not afraid of doing things her way and taking hardship for it. She was inspired to create this character because she was told that she could not do all her life so she was driven to get her name out there to prove the point that women can do anything men can do. Even her parents told her that she would be able to do nothing else besides become a secretary for some office. She heard this all her life even from the college she went to and through the media and all the publishing
