Appendix B: EAL Intervention Questionnaire Results 28 Introduction Recent statistics compiled in 2012 in the UK suggested that children whose language is not English has doubled since 1997 to over a million children (NALDIC, 2012), while a government study in 2009 indicated that “15.2% of pupils in UK primary schools and 11.1% of pupils in UK secondary schools were learning English as an additional language (EAL) (Carroll et al, 2011). These figures show the growing demand and importance of EAL intervention in school curriculum, which is one of the key factors in choosing to research EAL intervention for the topic of this case study. Another factor is that EAL intervention has a much wider impact than just a mere subject taught within the curriculum as it impacts the L2 (Second Language i.e. English) pupil’s progress and achievement in other subjects which are taught in English too, further amplifying the difficulties pupils may experience in the curriculum as a whole. Furthermore, within a pupil’s social setting, the inability to fully engage and integrate with English speaking peers or the wider society, can lead to isolation, hence affecting the child’s self-esteem and confidence.
