Dyslexia Keys: Early Awareness and Intervention There is no cure for dyslexia but there is much help available once it is detected. Dyslexia is a lifelong learning disability that requires early detection and intervention for academic success and enjoyment of reading. It is one of the most common and prevalent learning disabilities. Parents, teachers, pediatricians, and school psychologists all need greater awareness of the warning signs. Dyslexia is much more than seeing things backward or reversed. Knowing and understanding both the research and basic definitions is one of the first steps necessary for detection. Bright Solutions simple definition is “an inherited condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell despite at least average intelligence.” Dictionary.com states the definition as “any of various reading disorders associated with the impairment of the ability to interpret spatial relationships or integrate auditory and visual information.” Both of these definitions, although fairly easy to understand, are very broad and open to much interpretation. It is necessary to use these in conjunction with the research definition to fully comprehend the disability. The International Dyslexia Association (Gordon) research definition is very specific and comprehensive: Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.
