Dse141 Tma01 Summarising and Interpreting a Table of Milgram’s Experiment Results.

1083 Words5 Pages
Before starting the real experiment Stanley Milgram asked psychiatrists and college students to predict average level of shock at which participants called 'teachers' will refuse to continue. Predictions were that it will get to average of 123 (college students) and 140 (psychiatrists) and that none of participants will use maximum voltage, but in reality in the original study average voltage was 368 and 65% of participants used the highest voltage. In variations 1 and 2 Milgram changed the experimenter and it made big impact on results. In variation 1 where orders were given by an ordinary man average voltage was 244 and only 20% would go until the end, but in variation 2 with two experimenters giving contradictory instructions the average level of shock was 75 volts and none of them would go until the end. The Milgram’s experiment showed that it is very important how the orders are given and by whom. Most people would follow orders given by an official, uniformed experimenter and an ordinary man giving orders would be less of authority. Two experimenters giving contradictory instructions confuse 'the teacher' and make it all even less serious. (199 words) How and why Milgram’s research on obedience is relevant to preparing student nurses for working on hospital wards. When you decide to become a nurse, you think that you will be saving lives, making sick people’s lives easier and heal them. You do not think about decisions you’ll be making, or orders you’ll be following, or responsibilities you’ll be undertaking. Doctors and senior staff might be the ones giving the orders, but you will be the ones following and delivering them to others. Let me tell you about a research carried out by Stanley Milgram and how it is relevant to your future job. This needs to be more academic and in a format such as an executive summary.
