Bret Cooper ENG 101 T-TH Larry Hansen 17 September 2013 Drinking and driving is never a good idea, even for the experienced drinker. It was New Year’s Eve 2004 and the night was young. As always in Des Moines, Iowa this time of year, it was very cold, the ground covered with snow and the air so chilled it could freeze your lungs in just a short time. I was working at Buca Di Beppo and had just arrived for my shift but was already thinking about the fun I was going to have and where I was going to have it when I got off work and headed around the corner to the closest watering hole. The 80’s music on the jukebox reminded me of years gone by when I had done the same thing I was about to do tonight and that was to get drunk, do some coke and have a great time with friends. Just as I sat down the bartender Michelle handed me my first drink and my first shot of Jagermeister and wished me a Happy New Year. I drank them down without any hesitation and said let’s get this party started. A short time later, my buddy Mike asked to go to the bathroom. It was a one stall bathroom with a locking door and anyone in our crowd knew that when you got invited to the men’s room, you were about to do a big line of coke. I followed Mike the bathroom and we locked the door behind us as if everyone in the place didn’t know what we were about to do, but just in case, the door was locked. For some drunk reason I agreed to take a Breathalyzer test hoping by some act of God I might be under the legal limit because I had such a high tolerance. Not this time, I was 3 times the legal limit and it was not good. I woke up the next morning when the officers came to take me to court and I didn’t even remember getting arrested or driving home. I was charged with DUI and spent the next 24 days in jail. I will never forget this evening and how it changed my life forever. I do not ever take chances with drinking and driving anymore and have learned a very valuable lesson. Drinking and driving is not only a huge hazard to yourself but more so to other innocent people on the road. You put your life and the life of others in jeopardy when you choose to drink and then get behind the wheel of a car. I was drunk hundreds and hundreds of nights and drove and I think how horrible it would have been and how horrible I would feel today if I had hit someone or caused them harm because of my drinking and
