Drinking Age in the U.S. When you are eighteen years old you have multiple responsibilities such as chores at home or school, and obey the laws, among others. Most of the young adults who are eighteen are seen as a responsible, and mature young adult. If eighteen year olds show that they are responsible and mature adults, then why can’t they buy or consume alcohol? “In 1984 congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which required states to raise their ages for purchase and public possession to 21 by October 1986 or lose 10% of their federal highway funds.” Even though the reality is despite the law the majority of young people under 21 consume alcohol because they are treated like adults in every way except being able to drink…show more content…
So if you are able to do all those things, you should be able to purchase alcohol. In addition, the fact that in many countries young adults are allowed to consume alcohol at the age of 18, gives contradiction because there are not universal agreement on the way how some young adults in other countries can learn how to handle the alcohol at the age of 18, but in the USA why young adults aren't able to do it. However, whether you start drinking at 18 or 21, you will need to learn what your limit is. In this case, it does not matter what age you start drinking because you do not know how much alcohol you can handle until you start drinking. Also, if the young adults start to learn from each mistake when they turn eighteen year olds, the USA will have more time to teach their young adults instead to wait until they are 21. Those young adults who still live with their parents can receive help from them and learn how to manage all the situations such as understanding the effects of their mistakes when they drink alcohol in excess. As a result, it wouldn’t solve the whole problem of underage drinking, but it would be an important step in the correct direction to help young adults. As we have seen, the legal drinking age in the USA should be lowered to 18. We already recognize 18 year olds as responsible adults that can benefit the society in many different ways. Also, lowering the legal drinking age to 18 would be consistent with the freedom that supposedly every single habitant in the United States has.
