Drexler’s World Famous Bar-B-Que is a family owned restaurant and catering business with a long history of success in Third Ward Houston, Texas. The restaurant has been open since 1940’s with family as the central theme. The business head is Mrs. Eunice Scott. Mrs. Scott runs the business with her two sons James and Clyde. James prepares the meat and is co-owner. Clyde is an ex-NBA player and his basketball career provides inspiration for the décor. Clyde is involved in the day-to-day operations. Mrs. Scott’s daughter Virginia Scott manages customer orders and the register. There are a few other full-time employees. Drexler’s has seen growth and hence there has been a need to specialize tasks and separate duties. Drexler’s understands its organizational structure, the formal pattern of activities are meat preparation, standard fare preparation and front operations. Values play a large part in how Drexler’s Bar-B-Que interacts with its neighbors and customers. Since Mrs. Scott had deep spiritual roots, as a manager and individual she influences her organization’s behavior by her example. Mrs. Scott is always present and displays the values of honesty, hard work and treating customers in a way that keeps them coming back. She shows empathy as she talks to the customers about their needs and expects everyone in her employ to do the same. Since Mrs. Scott is always present she can observe not only the customers but her employees and this achieves effectiveness. She shows she is responsible for the effectiveness of her organization. Mrs. Scott is a good example of how a manager should encourage and nurture human resources and in turn all are rewarded by the success of the business because of good customer service.
