When Abigail was talking to Proctor she says “She is telling lies to about me! She is a cold sniveling woman, and you bend to her!”(Page 15, act one) she is basically showing her jealousy towards his wife. This stirred up the witch trials because Abigail wanted to be with Proctor and she would do just about anything. The fact that John proctor realizes all of his flaws and confesses to all of his sins is another reason why he can be considered a tragic hero. When Proctor had to go to the court to get his wife out of being accused of upholding witchcraft he eventually confess to his sins he committed.
But in Glück’s poem, this brings to mind the Salem witch trials or Joan of Arc burning at the stake. Gretel is in darkness, but the witch is lit forever in our minds by fire. Women are tortured as witches, and the child who grows into a woman is forever tortured by that memory. Orange blossoms are the traditional flower of weddings, but in Mock Orange the sickly-sweet flower is a symbol of sex as an imposed rite. That is also the theme in A Myth of Devotion.
Abigail and the girls pretend Mary is bewitching them again which make Mary breakdown and accuse john of being a witch. After being tried as a witch and told he was going to get hanged he has a chance to confess and live but he chooses to die and keep his name. As a result of the lies and the affair between john and Abigail there were a lot of innocent people killed and hurt even those who they claimed they loved. Abigail and Elizabeth are two very different characters but have some similarities. Both Abigail and Elizabeth show determination in order to get what they want, and they are both strong
He then begins about the prophecy of becoming king, which then led to thoughts of murder. Thus, the witches use that act of equivocation to their advantage. Different characters in Macbeth use equivocation and most often it is one that has a double meaning. One in particular is when Lady Macbeth states: “In every point twice done and then done double, Were poor and single business to contend Against those honors deep and broad wherewith Your majesty loads our house. For those of old, And the late dignities heap’d up to them, We rest your hermits”.
The Half hanged Mary and the Crucibles compare in the ways of each ones story lines up. During the time of the 1680s women were mostly put as target for being a so-called witch. The half hanged Mary states “oh yes, and breasts, and a sweet pear hidden in my body. Whenever there’s talk of demons theses come in handy.” Here Atwood is stating that because she is a women she is targeted to be associated with demons.Likewise as in the crucibles the trials all start with the young girls, and lead their way out to accusing more women. The two stories also compare in that each accusation is not based upon fact, for all is based upon a rumor.
When Hale comes and visits John and Elizabeth Proctor; he wants to investigate the people who are accused in court. Elizabeth and Proctor are astonished when Hale mentions that Rebecca Nurse has been accused of witchcraft. In the Crucible Rebecca Nurse is pictured as a saint throughout the play. The first clue that shows Hale is beginning to notice something wrong is when Rebecca’s been charged by saying “God forbid such a one be charged” (Miller 1210). Towards the end of Act II he starts to have some suspicion on what is going on because now Elizabeth Proctor is accused of witchcraft.
Instead, she continued her false accusations. This all accumulated to a major power trip by Abigail Williams that led to a demolished Salem, Massachusetts. She deserves the most blame because not only did she start the Salem witch trials but Abigail could have stopped
According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary malicious is an act that is “vicious, wanton, or mischievous in motivation or purpose.” In the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams, the seventeen year old niece of Reverend Parris, portrays the characteristic of being malicious. Throughout the novel, Abigail performs malicious acts of deceit that fuels the plot for the entire novel. The first act Abigail commits is an affair with John Proctor, a proud man who is married to Elizabeth Proctor. However, when Proctor ends everything between him and Abigail, Abigail is left hurt and envious of Elizabeth. In order for Abigail to enact revenge, she starts malicious rumors about Elizabeth.
In a fictional work based on the history, we see an enactment of the frenzy. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller Abigail Williams force others to join in witchcraft. She only thinks about her self and she loved John Proctor that’s why she was jealous to his wife Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail Williams also force other girls to obey her words. "Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.
Continuously throughout the text she performs acts of deception which tragically condemn others to death just to cover her lies. Miller exhibits that power lies with those who have people to impose it upon. This power is demonstrated most effectively in Mary Warren’s retraction in Act 3. When Mary confesses against the witchcraft is Salem Abigail and the other girls abuse the power of unity and accuse Mary of spiritually attacking them. Abigail says, ‘Oh please Mary!
