Inequality is a term used to describe the unequal distribution of valued social resources therefore its an unfair situation, in which some groups in society have more money, opportunities or power than others. In both study materials, the making social lives DVD and Learning Companion 1, we look at City Road. This road consists of lots of different shops, majority of which are restaurants and takeaways targeted at the local ethnic minority and student populations. After studying both study materials I have come to acknowledge the many different inequalities on City Road.
The first inequality I will talk about is an Ethnic inequality. In the DVD we come across Janet Symmons, who is originally from Africa but has settled here in the UK. She runs ‘Xquisite Africa’ selling various items that have been brought from Africa. This shop only appeals to a certain audience. Other ethnic groups that visit City road may feel left out as the shop doesn’t create a sense of belonging for everyone.
We then come across Colin Butwell, a newsagent owner, who has been running his shop since 1965.   In the DVD he states ‘there aren’t very many children live in this area it seems to me and those who do don’t seem to use traditional toys it’s all, you know, Play Stations and things like that now’ (‘Making Social Lives on City Road’, scene 3) .   Over time, lifestyles have changed and traditional toys don’t appeal to children nowadays. The local children may feel like the newsagent doesn’t have the toys or games they want, resulting in them not purchasing anything from his shop.  
The change in lifestyle has affected his sales as he runs a very traditional newsagent. He talks about how sales have dropped recently, ‘it knocked me a bit the Tesco’s opening two blocks up’ (‘Making Social Lives on City Road’, scene 3), which shows most families would prefer to go to Tesco where everything can be found under one roof.
